I’m not even sorry

You read that correctly though, put the code SPRING14 in at the checkout and with two or more items - any two - and get free shipping! Even in Afghanistan!

I get about $3 out of the $19 price of these things, and need to sell like nine of them to get a payout, but if and when I do, it all goes to charity! Put the fire horse on your chest and help someone be not evicted at the same time!

This was that link again!

Today’s homework: if you haven’t already, play a Wipeout game. If you don’t have a PS3 or PSP or don’t know how to set up an emulator, this short playlist should be a suitable education.

Guests: Spirit, Firenze, Tyco, Announcer, Fleetfoot, Misty, Ariel, all borrowed from the Wonderbolt HQ.

It’s a shipping disaster.

Act 7: Begin Happening

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner

(And then: Spitfaun. While start the engine on act 7 and make sure I didn’t leave the front door open.

As a preface, I’ll say that when I first made these characters, and for a long time afterwards, there was absolutely nothing to go on about them. They had all of like three lines each in the S1 finale and it wouldn’t be until Wonderbolt Academy last year that Spitfire got more than a token role, and until Rainbow Falls last week that Soarin did. So it wouldn’t be fair to say that my versions grew apart from canon as time went on; more that they’re completely different characters drawn from the same visual template. To represent this, I’ve kept their cutie marks as what they were before, even as their canon ones were revealed.
Also bear in mind that these are my assessments of the characters, and despite being the author, they’re not any better than anyone else’s.
SpitfireCanon Spitfire is not a nice pony. From what we’ve seen, she’s opportunistic and relentlessly pursues success, and allows this to blind her morals on occasion (giving Lightning Dust a free pass, throwing Soarin under the bus). She’s not completely beyond hope, and Rainbow Dash brings out the best in her. Still, given her position of authority, without a moral paragon like Dash around, she just lapses into careless pragmatism.
Firestarter Spitfire on the other hand is less easily defined. There are some similarities of pattern - her morals lapse readily, and without someone to keep her on the straight and narrow they can do so quite badly - but in different ways and for different reasons. Death follows her. She lost her father when she was 14. Fortunately for her, they moved to Fillydelphia, and she had Hurricane to prop her up. (In the alternate timeline from act 6, Spitfire never met Hurricane in the first place, and in Manehattan, she fell in with the wrong crowd, leading her to be quite the douchebag.) But then Hurricane went and died, and this role fell into Soarin’s lap. He’s not as good at it, but usually when he’s around things go better for her. Even if he is the team butt monkey.
Because of this, there’s always a bit of a nostalgia filter around her. She’s surrounded by mementos. She listens to 90’s music. She still sneaks out at night to spray graffiti everywhere. She’s constantly, at least on a subconscious level, trying to return to her younger, more passionate self - the her that got her to that juicy captain spot in the first place. When her morals lapse it’s because she’s submitting to whimsy, or just plain too preoccupied with the past to think about the present. Despite her superficial wisecracking and swagger, any kind of willpower and agency is the greatest triumph for her. Where Canon Spitfire might be a Pragmatic Anti-Hero in her own story, Firestarter Spitfire is very much a Classical Anti-Hero.
It’d be pretty safe to say that if it were Firestarter Spitfire in the show, unless she was actually drunk on the job, she’d have spotted Lightning Dust’s recklessness immediately and scolded her for it (too close to how Hurricane died for her liking), and Soarin would be too important to her to ditch on a whim. She might be weak-willed, but she’s not callous.
SoarinWe don’t know much about Canon Soarin, other than that he’s young and excitable. When he’s welcomed back on to the team, he just goes nuts. He’s also naive and gullible: when he’s told to rest up more, he just accepts it, and the fact that he goes from irritated to overjoyed on a dime indicates that he has no memory for trespass. When you think about that, him and Canon Spitfire are a really dangerous and unhealthy combination. You have to wonder what else she’s done that he hasn’t told anyone about.
Firestarter’s Soarin, however, is a bit older. Both him and FS Spitfire are around 30 during the run of this blog. He’s every bit as competent as Spitfire, but has a much better handle on his emotions. As I mentioned above, he’s kinda fallen into the role of the guy who keeps Spitfire sane, and he’s happy enough doing this, even with the occasional abuse he puts up with for it. Hurricane was his friend too, and he figures the least he can do is help Spitfire cope with her loss. This isn’t to say he’s stolid - he’s playful and goofy normally - he just copes with stress better.
